Archbishop John Barwa
Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, Eastern India
Archbishop Barwa will be with us during the Masses of the weekend of October 14-15. He will be making a mission appeal on behalf of his Archdiocese.
You may have read of the persecution of Christians in India by Hindu fanatics. His Archdiocese was “ground zero” with his cathedral and many other churches, rectories and ministries being destroyed or damaged and with the clergy and religious being killed or assaulted in the most base way. The Christians in his area number 183,000 out of a population of 13 million, of these 70,000 are Catholic and the area covered is almost 13,000 square miles. It has 36 parishes with 388 substations (we would call them missions).
One of his priests. Fr. Kishore Singh, the associate of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and who has heard confessions here at the parish, had his life in danger.
If after hearing the Archbishop, you would like to contribute to the support of rebuilding his ravaged archdiocese, you can make a check payable to Saint Thomas with the memo line reading India. Or you can place cash in one of our envelopes making the same notation with your name and address on the envelope. We will make sure that the funds are forwarded and will have it noted on your tax statement.
Please keep his people, his priests and religious, and himself in your prayers.
